Cancun Solo Travel: Is it worth it?

Cancun is a great place to travel solo. Its beautiful beaches, clear turquoise waters, and friendly locals make it ideal for those looking to explore paradise alone.

However, while it is possible to have a quiet, laidback vacation in Cancun, it is one of the biggest tourist spots in Mexico — accounting for around 25% of the country’s tourism. That means that even in the off-season, you’re bound to be surrounded by other visitors.

This isn’t inherently bad, especially if you’re new to solo travel. It can make it a lot easier to meet new people and make friends. It’s one of the best destinations for the first-time solo traveler.

Is Cancun safe for a solo female traveler?

Cancun is a great destination for solo female travel, especially if you want a tropical, all-inclusive experience. While there’s a lot to the city beyond the resort, it provides a safe environment to travel alone.

That said, the US government has warned American tourists to exercise increased caution when traveling within Quintana Roo — though to be fair, you should be doing this regardless of where you’re traveling.

You must keep aware of your surroundings and protect your belongings.

Is it safe to go out of the all-inclusive resorts in Cancun?

The short answer is yes, it is safe to leave your resort and explore the city. However, you should keep a few things in mind to ensure your trip is as safe and enjoyable as possible.

If you’re traveling off-resort, you want to make sure you:

► Do your research before you head out. Read up on the areas you’ll be visiting, and make sure you’re not going to end up in one of the areas you don’t want to be in.

► Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay attention to where you are and who is around you. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, leave the area immediately.

Is Cancun safe at night?

Much of Cancun is safe, but you need to take extra precautions if you plan to be out at night. Most recommend that you stay in the Cancun Hotel Zone after dark, and further stick to properties that have an on-site security guard.

You’ll want to be sure to keep your valuables and other belongings locked up in a safe place. And, if you do plan on venturing out at night, stick to well-lit tourist areas and avoid walking alone. If possible, travel with a group of friends.

Is it safe for a solo female traveler to rent a car in Cancun?

The short answer is yes, it is safe for a solo female traveler to rent a car in Cancun. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip:

  • Make sure you are renting from a reputable company (I recommend using Discovercars.com platform to find the best deals with the most popular rental companies)
  • Familiarize yourself with the area you’ll be driving to, and make sure to bring a phone with a local sim card (and an old-school map!)
  • Get full coverage car insurance and travel insurance, two very different and essential things to have.
  • Follow all of the Mexican driving rules
  • Trust your gut – if something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.

Is it safe to travel on ADO buses as a solo female traveler?

Yes, ADO buses are one of the safest and most affordable ways for solo female budget travelers to move about.

Whether you’re simply heading from the airport to the Hotel Zone, or you taking a longer trip down to a place like Playa del Carmen, ADO buses offer a safe form of transportation.

They are comfortable, clean, reliable, and, most important to some, inexpensive.

Is Cancun safe, in general, to travel to?

Cancun is generally considered safe to travel to. However, as with any destination, there are always safety concerns to be aware of. The best way to stay safe in Cancun (or anywhere else) is to use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and trust your gut instinct.

Some areas of Cancun are best avoided at night, especially if you’re alone. Use caution when walking around the city center after dark and consider taking a taxi instead of walking or taking public transportation.

Is there crime in Cancun?

While Cancun is considered a safe destination, it’s not without its crime (like any other large city). The United States government encourages American travelers to exercise increased caution while on vacation due to kidnapping and robbery.

However, much of the crimes reported in the area by tourists involve theft and pickpocketing.

During your solo visit, ensure you are always aware of your surroundings. Solo female travelers will also want to be cautious when meeting new people, make sure they don’t leave their drink unattended, and avoid accepting unsolicited consumable goods.

By taking some simple precautions, you can help ensure that your trip to Cancun is a safe and enjoyable one.

Can I drink tap water in Cancun?

No, like the rest of Mexico, the tap water in Cancun is not safe to drink. While you might find the occasional residential or commercial property that has separately filtered water, pretty much everyone (locals included) consumed purified water from bottles.

Your hotel will likely provide you with complimentary water bottles, and you can buy it pretty much anywhere you can pick up snacks or groceries.

Are there mosquitoes in Cancun?

Due to Cancun’s warm, tropical climate, there are typically mosquitoes all year round. While resorts often treat their properties for bugs, there’s no way to get rid of them in a warm destination permanently. To combat these pesky bugs you’ll want to:

  • Use mosquito repellent
  • Wear long pants or sleeves, especially during dawn and dusk when they’re most active
  • Use chlorine if you are in a place with a private outdoor pool

Mosquitos are most prevalent in the hot and humid summer months, but they’re really around year-round. Mostly mosquito bites are simply going to be annoying, but they can also transmit dangerous diseases.

It’s best to take what precautions you can to avoid them, so keep the bug spray handy!

Is there Zika in Cancun?

The Zika Virus can cause fever, rashes, sore muscles, joint pain, and red eyes, and is spread through mosquito bites. It’s something you don’t want to get (so, get some good bug spray!) luckily, it’s not terribly prevalent in Mexico but there have been cases.

While it’s always a risk, it’s found primarily in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. But being rare doesn’t mean impossible, so you want to take precautions against mosquito bites when traveling to Cancun.

Is there Dengue in Cancun?

Dengue is another virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. And while the risk is still relatively low in Cancun, it has been increasing in recent years. Symptoms are similar to Zika, and include:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Muscle and joint pain

In most cases, it’s treated with fluid and pain relievers. However, severe cases could result in hospitalization. If you start to feel sick while you’re in Cancun, visit a doctor (or an emergency room if symptoms are bad enough). Make sure that you get travel insurance beforehand to keep emergency costs low!

Where is Cancun located?

Cancun is situated on the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It’s just an hour or two an hour’s flight from most major airports in the United States.

This popular tourist destination stretches for 22 kilometers (14 miles) along a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and Laguna Nichupte. The majority of Cancun’s hotels, restaurants, and nightlife are concentrated on a stretch known as Zona Hotelera or “Hotel Zone.”

Is Cancun on the Riviera Maya?

Many use Cancun and the Riviera Maya interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. Cancun is a bustling metropolis, an international airport, and an island filled with hotels.

The Rivera Maya, on the other hand, is the region south of Cancun, that stretches from Puerto Morelos all the way to the Sian Kaan Biosphere.

It contains a number of pristine beaches and archaeological sites, along with the smaller resort towns of Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos.

Is Cancun on the Caribbean Coast?

Yes, Cancun is on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

What’s the closest Cancun Airport?

The closest airport to Cancun is the Cancun International Airport (CUN). It’s located just outside of the city center and is very well connected to the rest of the city. The next closest airport can be found in Cozumel (CZM), but most people flying into Cancun or Riviera Maya simply go through Cancun.

How to get from Cancun Airport to my hotel?

cancun airport transportation service
Book yourself a private transfer with CANCUN AIRPORT TRANSPORTATIONS – from only 39 USD up to 3 people

Getting from the Cancun airport to your hotel isn’t as challenging as you might think. While the obvious answer is a taxi, that’s actually not the recommended method.

I always opt to get a private transfer, which is the quickest and most comfortable way to get to where you’re staying. However, you can also:

  • Take a shared shuttle
  • Get on the bus
  • Book a private limousine (if you’re feeling fancy)

Is there an Uber in Cancun?

While the Uber app technically “works” in Cancun, you won’t be able to get a vehicle. Ride-sharing services do not operate in Cancun.

The top things to do in Cancun as a solo traveler

If you’re looking for things to do in Cancun as a solo traveler, here are some of the top activities:

1. Enjoy one of the beautiful beaches in Cancun

It should surprise no one that Cancun is full of beautiful beaches, and I can t think of a better way to spend your vacation than relaxing on the beach.

In particular, I recommend exploring the beautiful Playa Delfines where you can take an Instagrammable photo with the colorful Cancun sign.

Also, right opposite to Playa Delfines at a short distance, you can explore the tiny but beautiful Mayan Ruins of El Rey. which can be fun to visit when you leave the beach (or before).

Mind though that Playa Delfines is stunning and a must-visit but it doesn’t always have easy access to the water. In fact, it’s a favorite spot for surfers.

The best beaches with easy access to the water are Playa Langosta, or the beach in front of the following hotels: Presidente Intercontinental, Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, Hyatt Ziva, Krystal Altitude, and Krystal Cancun.

If you don’t want to stay there you can purchase a day pass and enjoy the hotel facilities during the day.

Another beach that I love, that is if you have a car, is Isla Blanca, a virgin and pristine beach located north of Cancun, a paradise for kite surfers but also beach lovers.

2. Visit Chichen Itza Archaeological Site

The Cancun area offers a lot of historic, beautiful sites. This includes Chichen Itza, one of the world’s seven wonders and a UNESCO heritage site.

If it’s your first time in Mexico and you have to choose one among all the Mayan ruins, this is the one I would pick.

Visiting Chichen Itza is not only for history buffs but also for nature lovers, and anybody who is interested to learn about the Mayan Culture.

There are many tours to Chichen Itza if you don’t want to go on your own. This tour I have selected is the most traditional one, which includes a certified guide, a stop in a mystical cenote, and a brief visit to the colorful colonial city of Valladolid. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 8413 Reviews

3. Snorkel a shipwreck

The Cancun area has some amazing underwater experiences, but not everyone’s up for a full dive. Snorkeling doesn’t require the prep work that a full-on scuba dive does but you can still see breathtaking underwater scenery and take a tour through a shipwreck.

4. Relax at Isla Mujeres

If luxury is the name of the vacation game, then a catamaran to Isla Mujeres is the tour for you. Sail on a catamaran over the crystal blue ocean, snorkel through schools of fish, and explore the cute, quaint Isla Mujeres.

The party atmosphere in the boat will also make it easy to mingle and get to know other travelers and make new friends.

5. Explore a Cenote

Cenotes are one of the most unique and gorgeous natural wonders in Mexico, and if you’ve never seen one I highly recommend you do.

There are many cenotes near Cancun and I always recommend renting a car, even as a solo traveler ( I do it all the time), and checking out some cenotes at your own pace. This is a great way to explore the area around Cancun and also to move around the city.

However, if you feel like sharing this experience with other travelers for more fun, you have the option to join some of the organized tours.

In particular, I recommend taking a private tour of Dos Ojos, which comes with a delicious Mayan lunch that you’ll want to write home about.

Kayaking in the Nichupte lagoon

6. Kayaking in the Laguna Nichupte

Whether you’re a beginner kayaker or someone more experienced, there’s no reason not to go for a kayak ride in this beautiful lagoon. You can easily rent a kayak right on the beach and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery you ll see during your trip. Or, book a kayak tour and explore with others!

7. Scuba diving with Aquaworld Wreck Dive

Scuba diving is one of my favorite Cancun activities, and one of my recommended tours is the Aquaworld Wreck Dive. Not only will you get a chance to visit the Underwater Sculpture Museum, you also get a chance to see a C-58 Minesweeper, experience a night dive, or check out the Great Mayan Reef.

Where to stay in Cancun

If you’re traveling solo to Cancun, you’ll want to choose the best neighborhood and hotel. Luckily, Cancun has lots of options, regardless of your budget. From luxurious suites to budget hotels, there are plenty of places for you to check out.

Zona Hotelera

This is the main tourist area of Cancun, and it’s where you’ll find most of the hotels and resorts. It’s also home to many restaurants, bars, and clubs. It’s a great place for solo travelers because there are plenty of other people to meet, but it can get crowded and noisy.

If you’re considering a stay in Zona Hotelera, here below are my recommendations:

Downtown

This area is quieter than the Zona Hotelera, but there are still plenty of things to do. When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of hotels and resorts that cater to solo travelers.

It’s worth pointing out that if you’re going to be staying outside of the Hotel Zone (and even if you’re going to stay there), you’ll want to limit your outside walks after dark.

While Cancun is relatively safe, you’re still in a foreign country and Cancun downtown has shady areas, especially at night.

Is it fun to go to a resort alone

I love staying at a resort when I’m traveling solo. Not only do you get an opportunity to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet (or rowdy parties, depending on the kind of resort you frequent), you can do whatever you want, whenever you want to — you don’t have a “party” you need to drag along with you.

It can feel weird for the first little bit. But once you’re settled in, you’ll be able to enjoy all the activities and amenities the resort has to offer without having to coordinate with anyone else.

If you’re looking for a fun-filled vacation where you can do whatever you please, check out these two Cancun resorts:

It doesn’t matter what kind of tourist you are, there’s a resort that’s perfect for your travel plans.

Top restaurants in Cancun

Mexico has some delicious food, and Cancun is no exception. If you’re traveling in the city by yourself, taking time to enjoy a good meal or two at some of the city’s top restaurants is well worth it. I do it all the time and enjoy it!

Here are some of the best places to eat in Cancun:

La Habichuela

For those looking for a high-end eatery to enjoy on their own, La Habichuela serves amazing Mexican gourmet. It’s a beautiful restaurant located close to Parque de las Palapas in Cancun’s downtown area.

Frontoni Pizzeria

If you’re itching for some casual, classic Italian pizza in the heart of Cancun, you’ll find it at Frontoni Pizzeria.

Che Che

My favorite place to enjoy a healthy meal in the city while I work on the go is Che Che. This quaint eatery has casual, cool vibes and a cozy ambiance that’s worth the visit.

Traveling to Cancun solo FAQ

Is Cancun expensive?

Cancun is a unique destination because it can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. If you’re looking for luxury, relaxation, and some quality pampering, you can plan that here — pending you’re willing to pay the price.

But if you want an inexpensive trip that focuses on exploring as much as you can without spending too much money, you can accomplish that too.

The truth is, Cancun can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.

Is Cancun worth traveling to?

Yes! There are A LOT of places in Mexico you should put on your solo must-visit list, but for me, Cancun is one of the best. I know I must be biased since Cancun has been my home for 7 years, but also the number of yearly visitors says something 🙂

Not only is it accessible for almost any budget, but it’s a great starter city if you’re taking your very first solo trip. There’s something for everyone in this tropical city, and it’s well worth the visit.

How much money should I take to Cancun?

Because you can make your Cancun vacation as budget-friendly or luxurious as you want, how much cash you bring along depends on what you’re planning on doing.

Chances are you’ve already paid for your hotel, so you’ll want to factor in travel, food, and activity costs.

If you’re a book-on-the-beach kinda gal staying at an all-inclusive, your expenses will probably be pretty low. However, if you’re up for an adventure every day of the week, you’ll need a little bit more pocket change.

Try working with around $100 USD per day for a mid-range budget. You’ll want this to include three meals (if you aren’t staying all-inclusive), transportation, and an activity per day.

Cancun Nizuc Bridge

Where can I exchange money in Cancun?

The Mexican peso is the standard currency used in Cancun. To avoid paying too much, you’ll want to pay for things in the local currency, which means you need to exchange your currency.

You’ll want to avoid exchanging currency at the airport or your hotel — these places usually charge a premium rate that you don’t want to pay.

Instead, opt to go with a bank or a currency exchange store. There are plenty you can find in the Hotel Zone.

What to pack for Cancun

What you bring to Cancun on your vacation depends on what you’re planning on doing. But there are a few essential items that any traveler to Cancun will want to slip into their bag. Those include:

  • Sunscreen — you’ll be spending a lot of time outside and those UV rays can be harmful
  • Bathing suit — you won’t want to miss the oceans and pools – I love Cupshe Brand, affordable and very good quality!
  • Insect repellent — avoid the mosquitoes bites
  • Comfortable shoes — you want something comfortable enough to walk around in
  • Theft-proof bag — to carry your valuables around, especially if you’re leaving the resort

What should I wear in Cancun?

Cancun has a warm, tropical climate year-round, and you’ll want to pack accordingly. The exact items you bring will depend on what you’re planning on doing, but a few Cancun packing tips you’ll want to take into account include:

  • Opt for light, breathable fabrics that can protect your skin from the sun
  • Don’t forget sun-friendly accessories like a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Bring more than one swimsuit (you don’t want to put a wet one on!)
  • If you’re staying on a resort that has restaurants, bring something dressier for a fancy meal “out”
  • Don’t forget comfy sandals or shoes to walk around in

What should I wear for an all-inclusive resort in Cancun?

When traveling to Cancun, Mexico, it is important to pack clothing that will be comfortable in the heat and humidity. The all-inclusive resorts in Cancun offer a variety of activities, so it is important to pack clothing that can be worn for both casual and dressier occasions.

Pack lightweight sundresses or shorts and tops for days spent lounging by the pool or on the beach. For dinner and nighttime activities, pack dresses or pants and a blouse. Be sure also to pack comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

Are 3 days enough in Cancun?

Three days isn’t a lot if you’re visiting Cancun — but if it’s all you have, it’s enough to have yourself a short immersive adventure.

If you’re working with a quick timeline, I would definitely schedule a half-day tour.

Set aside time to grab something delicious to eat at a local eatery and enjoy a beach afternoon!

Here’s a suggested itinerary for 3 days in Cancun:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Cancun and check into your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s main square, Plaza las Americas, and grab dinner at one of the many restaurants lining the square.
  • Day 2: Wake up early and head to Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. Spend your afternoon exploring the city’s beaches and shopping at Cancun’s many luxury resort malls.
  • Day 3: Spend the morning enjoying the beach before heading back to the airport.
choj-ha cenote
Choj-ha cenote – Great stop during a road trip from Cancun to Valladolid

How many days in Cancun is enough?

You can spend as much or as little time in Cancun that you want. There are plenty of things to see and experience, so you can make a big adventure out of it, or keep it quiet and relaxing.

You should spend at least three days in Cancun; any less, and you’ll probably be left wanting more.

Most people visit for 5 to 7 days, especially when heading to an all-inclusive resort. But you can really make any amount of time in Cancun work!

I created an amazing Cancun itinerary that covers the highlights of the city from 3 days to 7 days stay. Check it out if you need some planning.

Is Cancun just a party place?

While Cancun is known for its nightlife and beautiful beaches, this Mexican destination offers much more. It has something for everyone, from exploring ancient ruins to snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding, or even surfing.

What month is best in Cancun?

If you’re looking for the best time to travel solo to Cancun, you’ll want to consider the weather and crowds. April is a great month to visit because the weather is warm and sunny, but not too hot.

The crowds are also lighter in April, so you’ll have more opportunities to explore on your own.

What is the cheapest month to go to Cancun?

The cheapest time to visit Cancun tends to be between September and November. Because it’s peak hurricane (rain) season, it’s the most affordable time to go.

But don’t let the rain scare you away, you can find excellent deals on flights, hotels, and overall vacation packages.

There will be fewer crowds, and the weather is surprisingly nice, albeit with a few showers.

Make sure you get travel insurance when you book — just in case!

What’s better, Tulum or Cancun?

Tulum Archeological site
Tulum archeological site – one of the best day trips from Cancun – BOOK YOUR TOUR ON VIATOR

It’s very easy to decide between Cancun and Tulum because they have completely different vibes and layouts. It really depends on what you are looking for, as they are all amazing destinations but quite different.

Tulum is a smaller, more intimate town than Cancun. It’s perfect for solo travelers who want to avoid crowds and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

The beaches here are also quieter and more secluded, making them ideal for swimming, sunbathing, relaxing, and partying in many beach clubs in Tulum!

Cancun, on the other hand, is a bustling city with plenty of things to do. It’s perfect for solo travelers who want to be surrounded by people and have access to lots of activities.

The beaches here can be crowded but still beautiful, and there’s always something going on in the city center.

So, it’s difficult to say which one is better between Tulum and Cancun. It depends on what you’re looking for. But I assure you, whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong! 😜

What’s better: Cancun or Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres Aerial view - Caribbean coast
Isla Mujeres

There is a huge difference between Cancun and Isla Mujeres even though they are just 30-minute ferry apart. However, we cannot say which one is better.

It depends on what you are looking for. Isla Mujeres is an island where you can enjoy the small-town vibes and spectacular swimmable beaches like Playa Norte, as well as cute boutique hotels.

Cancun is a huge city with high-rise, all-inclusive hotels, a busy nightlife, and, oh well, big city vibes. 🙂

The good part is that we are so close to each other, no matter which one you choose, you can visit the other one by going on a group tour or on your own. So you will always win!

What’s better: Cancun or Cabo?

Cabo Marina Beach
Cabo San Lucas – Beach Near the Marina

Although they are both big cities with so many activities, spectacular hotels, and international cuisine among others the main difference between Cancun and Cabo is the landscape.

While Cancun is a long stretch of beach and it’s all flat, including the entire Yucatan Peninsula where Cancun is located, Cabo is at the tip of the mountainous Baja California Peninsula, surrounded by mountains and a rocky desert offering spectacular hikes and breathtaking views.

You will have a very different experience. Therefore, you should plan to visit both places once per year! Then, let me know which one you like best! 😁

What is better, Cancun or Punta Cana?

Cancun and Punta Cana are pretty similar destinations and yet very different.

They both have spectacular white sand beaches and various all-inclusive hotels, typical of touristy destinations.

Both destinations lack a cultural vibe or a charming historical center. Still, they offer incredible beach life and many places to explore in the surroundings, as I explain in the things-to-do section of my related post. Click on the link to read more about how Cancun compares to Punta Cana.

Both destinations are great for solo travelers as well.

Final thoughts: A Solo Guide to Cancun

Cancun is a beautiful, sandy beach destination perfect for solo travelers. Plenty of activities keep you busy during the day, and the nightlife is electric, but there’s also ample opportunity to kick back and relax.

Cancun has lots of hotels, so you can find one in any price range. There are also plenty of hostels in Cancun, so if you’re on a budget, you won’t have to worry about finding accommodation here.

And as far as activities go, there’s no shortage of things to do in Cancun. Whether you want to lounge on the beach all day or explore ancient ruins, you’ll be able to find something to suit your interests.

Cancun is a fantastic destination for solo travelers. If you’ve never been, you should absolutely check it out!
